If running the 25K, 10K or 5K Run isn't for you, consider taking the 10,000 Steps Challenge! The program is completely free of charge in 2010 and begins on the day most people are thinking about their heart -- February 14! You'll use a pedometer to chart your progress while the Fifth Third River Bank Run and Blue Care Network will assist in the motivation department through area training routes and online tips toward taking 10,000 steps a day until May 8, 2010.

By adding steps in your day, you can become a healthier person. You may have to build up to 10,000 steps a day, which equates to five (5) miles. If you are a sedentary person you may only average 2000-3000 steps per day at the beginning of the program. Adding steps, little by little over the 12 week program, can help with weight control, improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels and decrease stress. Plus, it can even be habit forming -- feel free to continue the program even after the Fifth Third River Bank Run on May 8, 2010, and you'll be on the road to better health for life!

If you don’t have a walking path nearby, simply go to www.mapmyrun.com, enter your location and desired mileage, and select something that makes sense for you!

10,000 steps for 12 weeks -- completely free of charge (sign up below)! The program includes your pedometer, a Blue Care Network water bottle, Blue Care Network's "Healthy Hints" E-Newsletter, access to an online training log and a $3 discount on a Fifth Third 5K Community Walk entry in case you'd like to join thousands of other walkers for a 3.1 mile trek through downtown Grand Rapids on May 8, 2010!

Download and print an entry form from the site, pick one up at any Fifth Third Banking Center or contact Race Headquarters at runinfo@53riverbankrun.com/616.771.1590 to have one mailed to you. We'll begin mailing out pedometers and 10,000 Steps Welcome Packets after January 7, 2010 so you can prepare for the official start of the program in February.
